BA Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) welcomes applications for the temporary position of

Studio tutor BA Fine Arts (0.2 FTE)

What will you do

The successful candidate will be an artist with an active art practice and a broad knowledge of the field of contemporary art. You will have an open and supportive attitude towards experiment, good listening skills, and the ability to respond to quickly changing situations. The students you will be tutoring are in the Painting & Printmaking section, so a prior knowledge or sensibility in tutoring these mediums will be an advantage. Considering that this is a temporary position for a semester, we especially welcome applicants who takes the time-bound nature of the position into account. Do you want to hold a workshop? A research group? Reading circle? Perhaps a deep dive into a specific medium or discourse? We are very excited to hear your proposals. You will work in a smaller team of 4 tutors, and participate in all areas of the general work of the department—such as staff meetings, assessments, preparation for graduation show, and so on.

Profile

  • Education to at least MA or MFA level, or equivalent;
  • An active artistic practice;
  • Previous teaching experience at BA level or equivalent;
  • A high level of fluency in spoken and written English;
  • The cultural competency to interact with a community of learners from
    varied backgrounds, social identities and gender expressions.

About the organisation

The Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) has educated artists and designers since 1682. Today, commitment, passion, and curiosity come together in a respectful, tolerant and culturally diverse learning environment, where skilled professional staff with international practices guide and accompany students through their studies. Our intensive programmes prioritise experimentation and personal guidance, allowing students the freedom to shape their interests and personal ambitions. We seek to foster an environment of innovation and disciplinary focus while also supporting collaboration and critical reflection on the ever-changing roles of art and design in contemporary society.

BA Fine Arts

At the BA Fine Arts, we work towards an aesthetic of curious inquiry and experimentation, to enable students to prepare for a practice that is consciously responding to contemporary contexts. We want our students' art practices to arise from the discourses within their own communities and experience, in close dialogue with a wide range of other social groups. We aim for our students to gain an understanding of the unique possibilities of art within a wider society, open to all possible sources that inform art-making. We teach our students to embark on professional art-making as an ongoing, cyclical process of creation, reflection, exploration, discussion, and dissemination.

What do we offer

This is a temporary position. The contract will begin as soon as possible, and for the duration of the rest of this academic year (end of August 2023). The position is classified as pay scale 11 under the Collective Agreement for Higher Professional Education (cao hbo). Your salary will include a holiday allowance of 8%, a fixed end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, holiday leave, good study and professional development opportunities, and a travel reimbursement within the Netherlands.

Within the Royal Academy of the Arts, we are working to create a community in which diversity and inclusion are the basic principles. We want the uniqueness of each individual to be recognised and welcomed within the school. We therefore invite you to apply and are curious to know who you are.
