You will head up the team of teaching staff, holding ultimate responsibility for the quality of the education within Social Practices. You will be continuously developing the pedagogical excellence within the mission of the Willem de Kooning academy, together with the teaching team. You will be constructing the academy’s profile, in collaborative processes, with course leaders, coordinators, supportive teams and the leadership.
Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences is a dynamic knowledge institute for higher professional education.
Over 30,000 students and around 3,000 members of staff are pursuing their career here - the typical Rotterdam way: through our Rotterdam Educational Model we provide practice-focused, well-considered, flexible education that allows all of our students and staff to play an important role in real, innovative projects. We teach them how to play that role and provide them with the necessary tools: an expert view, a lot of nerve, and a result-focused approach.
The Social Practices program runs since 2013 at the Willem de Kooning Academy and it has positioned itself through the radical reinvention of the curriculum as the manifestation of students and alumni in practice and society. An example is 2016 alumna Ermi van Oers, who recently was selected as a ‘toekomstbouwer’ by VPRO.
Having completed the first phase, we are now recruiting a new Program Leader who can guide the Social Practices in its second phase. Key focus is the position paper which states: 'Social Design as a political act’. With this the Social Practices need to be clearly identified in conjunction with the Commercial and Autonomous Practices at WdKA. Social Practices consist of programs focusing on Cultural Diversity, Sustainability/New Earth, Open Design, Gamification/Powerplay.
The Program Leader has a demonstrable affinity with a large variety of art and design disciplines and is able to manage educational excellence, engage with partners, stimulate research and represent students, teachers and researchers. By nature the program leader is resourcefully collaborative, always focused on the other, as Social Practices are relational by definition.
As Program Leader you are continuously focused on collaborative practices with existing and new partners, experts with the aim to research, test, validate and present the added value of an artist, designer or educator within complex social issues. An international perspective is key as Social Practices focus on local issues which reflect globally.
As Program Leader you organize the collaboration through educational programs with multi annual research trajectories under the supervision of the lector. You are familiar with the research methodologies which are currently identified:
Reframing, Embedded research, Systemic analysis, Making as enquiry. In this context alternative (economic) models and conditions for impact (real change) are the key focus.
The program leader has a strong focus on effective and efficient organization, for students projects (all education is organized through integrated project based learning), presentation activities, field trips, collaborations or external projects.
Next to the practice you play a key role within the larger organization through an active participation in the Bachelor Course Leader platforms and in the collaborative quality enhancement activities, together with dedicated supportive teams.
As a program leader you focus on sharing and presenting the processes and results of students and teachers. You are a capable presenter and moderator, who enjoys to share findings and results publicly, on our own podium beyond social and beyond-social.org, as well as at the annual Graduation Show and all external events the Willem de Kooning Academy participates in).
You have a relevant bachelor and master degree (strong preference for a pedagogical degree or training). You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Dutch.
- Engaging leadership
- Efficient organizer
- Clear communicator
- Agile educator
- Courageous collaborator
The Willem de Kooning Academy/Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool Rotterdam) offers you a temporary contract as a principal lecturer. The salary range is HBO-CAO grade 11 or 12 (€ 3,392.46 minimum and € 5,301.29 maximum per month) for fulltime employment, exclusive of 8% holiday pay and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. Our fringe benefits include excellent training facilities and an attractive pension scheme.
