Field of Research Art & Sustainability
Your field of research focuses on of how visual artists, designers, musicians and performing artists can contribute to the transition to a more sustainable society. You focus on the development of innovative methods and practices and investigate art’s potential to engender sustainable transitions. You will foster collaborations and crossovers between the arts into other sectors and disciplines at a regional, national and international level; based on the programmes of the creative industry “Groningen Creative & Resilient City”.

Groningen Creative & Resilient City is a consortium that mobilises art, design, technology, architecture and engineering within and outside of the Hanze University. Together with partners we work on new applications that will make the city and the region climate resistant in close collaboration with the Research Centre Biobased Economy and Research Centre for Built Environment. Different challenges have been subdivided into the innovation labs Circular Design Factory and Climate Adaptation. These innovation labs are consortiums of knowledge and educational institutions, care and welfare organisations and businesses, all focussed on open innovation and co-creation. As professor you are expected to make a key contribution to the development of these innovation labs.

Art & Sustainability
Based on the strategic plan of the Research Centre you will focus mainly on the strategic theme of Art & Sustainability. The way in which society uses its finite resources now is becoming an issue. Not only because these resources are finite but also because the way of consuming triggers climate change. Our production system has to change and instead of producing waste, we have to work on making the system sustainable. Making our world sustainable is not just about the natural world, but also about societal gains, the human dimension and sustainable and reciprocal relationships.

The arts can contribute to this transition process. Its focus is on the development of creative practices and material knowledge, language, technical skills, and new revenue models as well as on the fostering of social cohesion through art and also on contributing to sustainable and reciprocal relationships by way of art. This is the reason why we collaborate with other sectors in sustainability issues. Innovation is achieved on the edges of professional fields and takes place across disciplines.
