The Professor Fashion Research & Technology is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring the agenda for the research group, as well as translating the agenda into practice-based research, development and educational projects and activities. S/he operates in the context of the Center for Applied Research (Create-IT) at the Faculty of Digital Media & Creative Industries (FDMCI) of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) and is closely aligned with the Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI). The Professor will lead a motivated team of researchers and lecturers, that cooperates closely with a multitude of internal and external stakeholders in the field of smart, sustainable and digital fashion. The research outcomes, the process and its methodologies will benefit academics, professionals and society alike, and will lead to the further development of our lecturers and researchers and continuous innovation in our educational curricula.

The Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) is based in The Netherlands, in the city of Amsterdam. Amsterdam is a cosmopolitan city where 175 different nationalities live and work together and where the English language is largely spoken. The city is a hotbed of education and research in all conceivable areas: culture and society, trade, logistics, aviation, shipping, ICT, sport, healthcare, education and much more. At AUAS we take full advantage of this wealth of opportunities in order to provide the best possible education and produce cutting-edge research. The business sector needs graduates who have both intercultural and international (work/study) experience. For this reason AUAS ensures that internationalisation is integrally embedded in our educational programmes and the research activities of our schools. The AUAS trains the professionals of tomorrow. Practical orientated research is an important component of the educational programmes offered by our schools. Our research always addresses a real-life world problem from the professional field, and we conduct the research in close collaboration with both academics and professionals working in the particular discipline. We have a joint Executive Board with the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and our close cooperation with the UvA is particularly valuable for research purposes. The AUAS consists of seven schools. We have a total of 43,000 students  and offer a total of 80 bachelor and master programmes. We have 250 partner institutes across 50 different countries and contribute to various educational projects such as curriculum development, research projects, student/professor exchanges and work placements within an international working field. This ensures that the education provided by AUAS is truly internationally orientated.

The fashion industry and fashion education are urgently in need of new, future proof narratives to inspire, guide and support their further development. The many and often devastating social, environmental and economic impacts of the fashion industry call for radically different ways to conceptualise, design, produce and discard fashion items as well as the ecosystems surrounding it. Digital technology, Internet of Things, advancements in materials (bio / nano / interactive), as well as the renewed foregrounding of legal, ethical and societal aspects of innovation have a strong and growing impact. Responsible Design, Critical Making, Art-Science collaborations and Transdisciplinary approaches to R&D will help to conceptualise, develop and research alternatives to the as yet dominant systems in fashion; to shape and disseminate the new narratives that are called for; to further develop lecturers / researchers, and educate agents of change that will together shape the fashion industry of the future.
