We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the excellence of the academic community, teaching, and research.
The successful candidate will be expected to: (1) be an external spokesperson on the field of expertise and represent the university in public debates, (2) connect to relevant tourism industry partners in the field of expertise, and mobilise resources from this industry to develop joint research projects, (3) interact with and contribute to interdisciplinary research at BUas, (4) advise and mentor students, and (5) have a strong commitment to high-quality teaching.
The professor will develop research activities in the field of tourism studies that connect to the Breda University research themes. The successful candidate is expected to acquire substantial external research funding. In addition to conducting research, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching in the aforementioned academic bachelor’s and master’s courses. The professor will furthermore represent BUas in relevant networks, especially in the travel and tourism industry.

At the same time, we see that when tourists travel and visit places, interaction between hosts and guests may cause tension. In the face of ever-increasing visitor numbers, there is a need to understand better these host-guest interactions.
The tourism industry is rapidly evolving and innovating. IT technologies, robotica, machine learning and artificial intelligence help to build new business models in the travel and tour operating industry. Corporate decisions are increasingly based on analysis of large data sets, making use of data sciences. Data are also important to analyse tourism impacts on society, and to support the process of decision towards a positive impact of tourism on destinations. These could include effective management of visitor crowds, and host-guest relations.
Our Academy for Tourism is providing leadership for academic and applied research and education in the Netherlands.
Tourism researchers contribute to the BUas research themes and work with national research centres such as the Centre of Expertise for Leisure, Tourism and Hospitality (www.celth.nl).
An overview of research of Academy for Tourism, conducted by some 15 staff and 30 to 40 annual master’s and undergraduate students, is available from our Centre for Sustainability, Tourism and Transport (www.cstt.nl). The field of tourism presents many opportunities for interdisciplinary research and participation in multidisciplinary programmes.
Our research supports the skills development of staff and students in the various degree programmes. In this respect, we have identified three key skills dimensions for the travel and tourism industry in the coming decade: green, digital and social skills.
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant field, at the time when employment begins. The candidate should have proven international experience in the domain of tourism and have a clear preference for applied research geared towards tourism business innovation and impacts of tourism on destinations and society.
The candidate will have a track record in academic teaching; and have a portfolio of ongoing projects; a track record of publications in internationally rated journals and books with publishing houses of international standing; experience in successfully obtaining research grants from funding agencies; the capacity and the disposition to engage in interdisciplinary research within and beyond the institution.
The candidate must be able to meet eligibility requirements for work in the Netherlands at the time when the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Candidates must possess excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
Breda University of Applied Sciences provides assistance to guide expatriate employees through the process of relocation and settling in. Dutch tax authorities may offer tax reduction to applicants from abroad (which makes tax rates comparable to the UK and US).
The salary for this position will be at level 14 of the CAO-HBO (Collective Labour Agreement), earning in between a monthly minimum of €5,080.14 and a maximum of €6,475.81 gross (full-time). You will be officially appointed in the function of Professor. You will receive a fixed annual benefit of 8.3%. Apart from this, Breda University of Applied Sciences offers you an 8% holiday allowance and a compensation for your health insurance. With a full-time position and a working pattern of 40 hours per week you are entitled to 10.7 weeks of holiday leave (including public holidays).
