Do you love coding, and would you like to help create a novel platform that makes a real impact in society? Apply now for this challenging job as junior researcher for civic technology!

You will work as junior researcher and software engineer in a multidisciplinary team to create an innovative platform for citizen participation. The team’s challenge is to develop a working system and deploy it outside the lab, in real life situations – with citizens that use the platform to form a shared vision for their neighbourhood.

The platform’s beta version is created using node.js and related technologies and we’re now going into the next iteration of development. The team is already comprised of interaction designers, a software architect, communication experts, a media psychologist, technology philosophers, and a front-end developer. You will join the team with your excellent full-stack development skills and enthusiasm to put them to work for the common good. We are currently evaluating the beta of the platform in practice to gain feedback from usage and designing the next iteration of its interface and functionality.

Your main job is to help develop the platform and to ensure solid coding and proper documentation, participating in the open source development in collaboration with the municipality of The Hague and other partners.

You will be joining the research group on Civic Technology, in the Faculty of IT & Design and part of the centre of expertise Governance of Urban Transitions. You will be able to participate in other faculty activities and in other research projects of the group, including an exciting project on AI-based speech interactions in public spaces. Also, participation in teaching is an option.

To expand our team, we are looking for a full-stack code enthusiast and a team-player, a developer who dreams in code but understands design.

  • that you have demonstrable experience in collaborating in a team, during your training or in practice;
  • that you sufficiently master the English (or Dutch) language to communicate in the team.

Your candidacy would improve, if you could share examples out of your work experience that show that you:

  • are able to share ideas and opinions eloquently and correctly, in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in writing;
  • stay focussed on realising results and attaining goals as well as signalling opportunities to improve results;
