Breda University and Tilburg University seek to appoint an outstanding academic candidate in the field of Leisure and Tourism Studies. The successful candidate will have developed an international reputation and networks in Leisure and/or Tourism Studies and/or a related research area.
Potential areas of specialization include a broad range of topics within the current Breda University Research Program, which seeks to ‘understand and explain the rise, maintenance and organization of chains and networks of leisure and tourism practices, the contexts in which they develop and the actors that participate and shape them.’ Relevant areas of expertise related to the research program can include:
- The role of tourism and leisure (culture, sports, recreation, (themed) entertainment, volunteering) in the (sustainable) development of cities and regions;
- The dynamics of leisure and tourism practices in the network society;
- Transformations in leisure and tourism;
- The nature and development of leisure and tourism experiences, choices and behaviour.
The professor will develop his/her own research activities in the field of leisure and tourism studies and will initiate, develop and supervise PhD research projects under the academic responsibility of Tilburg University, in particular the School of Social and Behavioural Sciences. The successful candidate is expected to acquire (substantial) external research funding.
In addition to conducting research, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching at the mentioned academic bachelor and master courses.
The professor of Leisure and Tourism Studies will have administrative duties and responsibilities within Breda University regarding the three academic programmes and the integrated scientific and applied research program. The professor will become a member of Academy for Leisure’s management team, but will also act as a linking pin to the Academy for Tourism. The professor will also represent Breda University in relevant networks within higher education and industry. The professor is able to represent our institute, and leisure and tourism as a scientific field of study, in (inter)national media and on international academic conferences.

Breda University is partnering with Tilburg University to provide leadership for academic and applied research and education in the Netherlands in the field of Leisure and Tourism. We see these programmes as an important element of the strategy to be an international specialized quality institution in the fields of tourism, leisure& events.
The Institute in Breda offers 2 Bsc. courses in leisure studies and in tourism studies and an Msc. course in Leisure and Tourism Studies. Both Breda University and Tilburg University build on a long lasting cooperation in research, methodological knowledge development and PhD trajectories.
The successful candidate will be appointed as a full professor by Tilburg University, but the primary employment and labour agreement will be with Breda University.
The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in social and behavioural science and will have a research specialization in leisure and/or tourism studies or a related field. The candidate will have: (i) a strong track record in academic teaching; (ii) successfully supervised Ph.D. students and have a portfolio of ongoing projects; (iii) a strong track record of publications in internationally rated journals and books with publishing houses of international standing; (iv) experience in successfully obtaining research grants from funding agencies; (v) the capacity and the disposition to engage in interdisciplinary research within and beyond the institution; and (vi) the capacity and the disposition to take on important administrative tasks in Breda University’s Academy for Leisure (and as a linking pin to the Academy for Tourism).
The candidate will have excellent command of the English language. The candidate must be prepared to move to the Netherlands.
Breda University of Applied Sciences provides assistance to guide expatriate employees through the process of relocation and settling in. Dutch tax authorities may offer tax reduction to applicants from abroad (which makes tax rates comparable to the UK and US).
The salary for this position will be at level 15 / 16 of the CAO-HBO (Collective Labour Agreement), earning in between a monthly minimum of €5,510.03 and a maximum of €7,817.89 gross (full-time). You will receive a fixed annual benefit of 8.3%. Apart from this, Breda University of Applied Sciences offers you an 8% holiday allowance and a compensation for your health insurance. With a full-time position and a working pattern of 40 hours per week you are entitled to 10.7 weeks of holiday leave (including public holidays).
